The earliest types of Native American jewelry were made primarily from turquoise, other stones, and shell, which was traded among tribes and early travelers. In the 1800’s the Navajo learned and perfected the art of silversmithing. By the early 1900’s, with the help of trading posts, Navajo silver work became a major source of income for many families. Through the decades jewelry has been a symbol of status for Native Americans as well as a commodity for trade. Though styles and techniques evolve and change artisans continue to create beautiful hand-crafted jewelry made with natural stones and sterling silver.
